The Rift : Lesser Systems
"When the far traders came, we cheered as an era of rugged survival on a hostile dust bowl came to an end.
Three generations on...everyone's a drug addict, uplifting always favours the offlander, and our children sneak aboard far traders to run from their home." -Oloda Helvaeyl, Dynomen resident and farmer |
The Rift is a patch of metadimensional space that appeared after the Scream. Traffic in the Rift goes twice as fast, though the metadimensional currents are harder to chart and are the source of many a bumpy ride.
While the Rift is not as civilized as its neighbour subsector Caleston Sigma, it contains a few spacefaring systems and proto-interstellar polities. As such, it is often seen as the "spearhead" for the spread of "proper" neo-Imperial civilization, even though Caleston Sigma did not have any role in any of the Rift's systems recovering spaceflight.
The Rift contains several lesser systems - backwater dustbowls, savage worlds, and colonized gas giants. The Rift is also the home of Lolth's Folly, a black hole imprinted with a drider Unbidden fleet forever red-shifted at its event horizon.

Iolytil System |
Star Class : M
Hex Tile : 1003 Habitable Planets : 1 out of 8 Refueling Station : 1 (Bytha's Hope) Deep Space Stations : 0 Wayrest is a refueling star halfway between Sylsato and Bytha. On its one habitable planet, Dynomen, civilization, remnants of exploration teams, survives near the ruins of an ancient alien city and the wind-swept desert that surrounds it. There are many factions on Wayrest, usually small villages or outposts banding together against the harshness of the wastes. The biggest faction on Dynomen is the New Desert Commonwealth. Descended from the Third Wave research outpost, made up of researchers, scavengers and looters seeking their fortunes venturing into the alien ruins, it is but one of many splinter groups, albeit one lucky enough to run its own hydro plant rather than tap into the planet's decaying water infrastructure, and armed well enough to defend its claim. Its ruler, Darius III, claims legitimacy through bloodline. Albeit he has little direct control over the various outposts under its rule, his population is generally content, and far more preoccupied with survival in the wastes. In recent years, rampant drug addiction and a restless youth population eager to leave Dynomen behind are weakening many a pessimistic, sometimes despairing NDC settlement.. Ever since contact has been re-established, the NDC has endeavored to equip its most loyal subjects with rudimentary spaceports, thanks to the help of engineers from the Bythan Mandate. One such spaceport is Goodsprings, a small outpost of no more than 400 souls on the edge of the NCD's territory, and a little known source of alien knickknacks for tolerated offworlders. Advisory : weaponry on most settlements across Dynomen is unusually unrestricted, and members of the NDC's inner circle are typically immune to legal proceedings. Proceed with caution. |
Star Class : A
Hex Tile : 803 Habitable Planets : 1 out of 12 Asteroid Bases : Many Deep Space Stations : 1 Iolytil is an A-class star system that contains one inhabited world, the cold world Thora, forever covered in green clouds.. Thoda is split across warring, nomadic tribes and there is no end in sight to the conflict. Even though they form a late T2/early T4 civilization, the many tribes take advantage of deals with offworlders that give them an edge in their struggle, even if they have little to offer back. Iolytil is an ideal pirate system and piracy is rife in this system : it sits on the easiest trade route between the Rift and the Caleston Sigma subsystems, is not controlled by any major faction, and the locals make for good slave stock during pirate raids. Visitors are urged to take appropriate security precautions. |
